What the checker looks at

Contact details

Email, phone number and a LinkedIn link, so employers can reach you.

Length

One to two pages, around 350 to 900 words, which suits most UK roles.

Key sections

Profile, work experience, education and skills, with clear headings that applicant tracking systems can read.

Measurable results

Numbers, percentages and amounts that prove what you achieved.

Action verbs

Bullet points that start with strong verbs such as led, improved or delivered.

Clichés

Phrases like "responsible for" or "hard-working team player" that recruiters skip.

Personal pronouns

"I" and "my" make a CV read like a letter. Short, direct bullet points read better.

Personal details

UK employers do not need your date of birth, marital status, nationality or photo.

Dates

Start and end dates on each role, so there are no unexplained gaps.

Readability

Short bullet points instead of long paragraphs.

Job advert match

The words the employer uses most, and which of them your CV is missing.

Questions about the CV checker

Is the CV checker really free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no limit. You can check as many CVs and job adverts as you like.

Is my CV uploaded anywhere?

No. The check runs inside your browser. Your CV is not sent to our servers and is not stored. If you close the page, it is gone.

What score should my CV get?

Aim for 80 or more. A score between 60 and 79 means a few quick fixes will make a real difference. Below 60, your CV is likely being skipped.

What is an applicant tracking system?

Most medium and large employers use software to sort CVs before a person reads them. It looks for clear section headings and the keywords from the job advert, which is why the job advert match matters.

Can I check a Word CV?

Yes. Open it in Word, select all the text, copy it and paste it into the box. PDF files can be uploaded directly.

Can someone fix my CV for me?

Yes. Polishly, our CV service, rewrites and redesigns your CV from your real experience, ready for applicant tracking systems, from £3. It takes about ten minutes.
